As one of the first candle manufacturers in Europe, Eika found its origin in Fulda in 1824 with the company Berta Candles, founded by Franz Emil Berta. Traditionally Fulda has been the centre of candle manufacturing. Industrial fabrication began in the first third of the 19th century and henceforth Fulda turned out to be the centre of the German candle industry. Temporarily, up to half of all German candles came from Fulda.

In 1935 the brand name "Eicka" was introduced - derived from the family name Eickenscheidt. The opening for international markets, especially the american, required an easy spelling, so in 1963 brand name "Eicka" changed its spelling into "Eika". With this feminine name and a golden label, his candles were supposed to conquer the market and the hearts of - for the most part - female customers.

Still today, the golden label still serves as a symbol for high quality candles and makes Eika one of the most famous candle brands of Germany and is one of the leading european candle manufacturers with international customers all over the world.

Production and raw Materials

There are different possibilities to produce candles: Eika uses both traditional handwork and impressive modern techniques. Depending on the kind of candles to be manufactured, the right production method has to be chosen.

There are several different waxes used as burning bases. Predominantly, candles are manufactured from Paraffin, a wax which is mostly extracted from crude oil. To some extent, candles are also produced from Stearin. This wax is extracted from animal and vegetable oils and fats, which means renewable raw materials. Chemically it is a mixture of different fatty acids.

The composition and right choice of the wick is essential for the clean and proper burning of candles since these two components form a unit. Eika leaves nothing to chance here and has its own wick factory in Fulda.

The wicks are braided in a plait pattern from a fibre, preferably cotton. After that they are finished, i.e. cleaned, primed and, if necessary, bleached.

Scented Candles are finished with selected fragrances depending on season, trend and popularity. The variety of our scented candles covers for example spring like almond blossom, summer classics like orange or lemon and of course trend scents like gingerbread or tangerine for winter.

Last but not least there is the delicious smelling bees’ wax which is a metabolism product of honey bees used to build honeycombs.
